07 December 2009
On 8 December 2009, the full complement of Gauteng Members Executive Committee (MECs) visited and engaged communities in support of the Liquor Law Enforcement campaign. The campaign was an attempt by the Gauteng leadership to assist in the prevention of road accidents that result in high number of fatalities and promoting responsible consumption of alcohol during the festive season.
The Liquor Law Enforcement campaign supports the Arrive Alive campaign, an initiative by the National Department of Transport to drastically reduce the carnage on South Africa's roads. With between 9,600 and 10,000 fatalities in approximately 500,000 accidents on the roads every year, costing the economy in the region of R12 billion, the government has the only option of reinforcing and aggressively engage in communicating the objectives of the campaign. The campaign's main objectives include the reduction of the number of road traffic accidents in general and improving road user compliance with traffic laws amongst others.
The MECs visited different regions of the province sharing information about the dangers posed by drinking and driving and general irresponsible consumption of alcoholic drinks. The campaign covered places such taxi ranks, shopping centers, taverns and other places where alcoholic drinks are sold.
